At Nartiang, in the West Jaintia Hills, a large number of monoliths stand together in a grove, forming one of the biggest concentrations of megaliths in Meghalaya. The upright stones (menhirs) and flat table stones (dolmens) were raised as memorials and are associated with the Jaintia kings, who once had a summer capital here.
The tallest menhir rises around eight metres. Nearby is an old Durga temple associated with the Jaintia royal family, reflecting the blend of indigenous and Hindu traditions in the region's history.
The site is quiet, uncrowded and deeply atmospheric.
