Meghalaya Tourist Places: 31 Places to Visit

Every place worth your time in Meghalaya, with photos, distance from Shillong, the best months to go and entry fees.

Updated September 2026By Shayeed Hussain, Shillong31 places

Meghalaya — "the abode of clouds" — packs an extraordinary range of sights into a small state: some of the tallest waterfalls in India, bridges grown from living tree roots, river water so clear that boats seem to float, limestone caves, sacred forests, and a capital with a lively music scene.

This guide lists 31 Meghalaya tourist places, ranked by how much we think each is worth your time. Every entry includes the distance from Shillong, how long to spend there, the best months to go and the entry fee, so you can build a realistic route. The photographs are from our own trips; places without one are marked, and we add new photos as we travel.

How to plan a trip around these places

Most Meghalaya tourist places fall into four clusters. Grouping them saves hours on the road:

  • Shillong and around — Shillong city, Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, Laitlum Canyons and Mawphlang. Base: Shillong.
  • Cherrapunji (Sohra) — Nokhalikha, Seven Sister, Kynrem, Weisadong and Dainthlen Falls, Mawsmai and Arwah caves, and the Double Decker Living Root Bridge. Base: Sohra, two nights.
  • Dawki and the border villages — Dawki, Shnongpdeng, Mawlynnong and the Riwai root bridge. Base: Shillong or a riverside camp at Shnongpdeng.
  • Jaintia Hills — Jowai, Krang Suri Falls, the Nartiang monoliths and Thadlaskein Lake. Base: Jowai or Shillong.

The Garo Hills in the west — Balpakram and Siju — need a separate trip via Tura. For driving times, see our Meghalaya distance chart, and check the best time to visit before you fix dates.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Still unsure? Our Shillong team answers on WhatsApp, usually within minutes.

Ask a question

Our top picks are 1. Sohra — Cherrapunji, 2. Double Decker Living Root Bridge, 3. Dawki & Umngot River, 4. Shillong, 5. Nokhalikha Falls, 6. Mawlynnong Village, 7. Krang Suri Falls, 8. Laitlum Canyons, 9. Seven Sister Falls, 10. Umiam Lake. Each is covered in detail on this page with its distance from Shillong, best months and entry fee.

Cherrapunji (Sohra) is the most famous, for waterfalls such as Nokhalikha and Seven Sister Falls, its caves, and the Double Decker Living Root Bridge nearby. Dawki's crystal-clear Umngot river and Shillong, the capital, are close behind.

Five to six days covers the main highlights — Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong and the root bridge trek. Add one or two days for the Jaintia Hills (Krang Suri and Nartiang). The Garo Hills need a separate trip of two to three days.

Shillong Peak (10 km), Elephant Falls (12 km), Umiam Lake (17 km), Laitlum Canyons (23 km) and Mawphlang Sacred Forest (25 km) are all within about an hour of Shillong.

Most are, but conditions change a lot with the season. Dawki boating is often suspended in the monsoon, trekking trails get slippery from June to September, and some waterfalls thin out in the dry months.

Indian citizens do not need a permit. Foreign nationals do not need a Protected Area Permit but must register within 24 hours of arrival, which hotels usually handle. Shillong Peak requires photo ID, and Balpakram National Park needs forest department permission.
