Laitlum, loosely translated as "the end of the hills", is a ridge on the edge of the East Khasi Hills where grassland suddenly falls away into deep, forested gorges. On clear days you can look down on the village of Rasong far below, reached by a long flight of stone steps; on misty days clouds roll through the canyon at eye level.
It is only about an hour from Shillong, which makes it one of the easiest big-landscape experiences in Meghalaya. There is little infrastructure — a few stalls and a parking area — so the ridge still feels open and wild.
The edge is unfenced in places and the grass can be slippery. Keep well back from the drop, especially in fog or rain.
