Mawlynnong, in the East Khasi Hills near the Bangladesh border, became famous after it was described as the cleanest village in Asia. Walking its paths explains why: bamboo dustbins at every turn, swept stone lanes, gardens full of flowers, and a community that treats cleanliness as a shared responsibility.
Beyond the village there is a bamboo "sky view" platform with views toward the Bangladesh plains on clear days, and the Riwai living root bridge a short drive away. Local families run homestays and small eateries serving simple Khasi meals.
Mawlynnong gets busy with day-trippers from late morning. Arrive early or stay overnight to see it at its quietest, and remember it is a living village — ask before photographing people and homes.
