Shnongpdeng is a village on the Umngot river a short drive from Dawki, and it is where travellers go for the clear water without the Dawki crowds. In winter the river here is wide and slow, crossed by a suspension bridge and lined with sandy campsites.
Local operators run kayaking, snorkelling, cliff jumping, zip-lining and boat rides, and camping beside the river has become one of the most popular experiences in the Jaintia Hills. Nights by the water, under the stars, are the reason to stay.
Like Dawki, it is best from November to March. In the monsoon the river rises quickly and activities are suspended.
