Mawsmai Cave, near Mawsmai village just south of Sohra, is the most accessible of Meghalaya's limestone caves. The show-cave section is lit and takes around 15–20 minutes to walk through, squeezing through narrow passages past stalactites and stalagmites shaped by centuries of dripping water.
Meghalaya has some of the longest cave systems in the Indian subcontinent, most of them explorable only by specialist caving teams. Mawsmai offers an easy taste of that world without equipment, which is why it is on almost every Cherrapunji itinerary.
Some passages are tight and low and the floor can be wet, so it is not ideal for anyone uncomfortable in confined spaces.
