Mawsynram, in the East Khasi Hills, is often cited as receiving the highest average rainfall of any inhabited place on earth, a record it contests with nearby Cherrapunji. In the monsoon the village is wrapped in cloud and rain for weeks at a time, and the surrounding cliffs pour with temporary waterfalls.
The main sight is Mawjymbuin Cave, known for a large stalagmite formation over which water drips from the roof. The drive from Shillong passes through rolling Khasi uplands and small villages.
Most travellers visit Mawsynram as a half-day or day trip. Come in the monsoon for the rain it is famous for, or in winter for clearer views.
