Elephant Falls is the closest major waterfall to Shillong, a series of cascades on the edge of the city. The British named it after a large rock beside the falls that resembled an elephant; the rock was later destroyed in an earthquake, but the name stayed. Its Khasi name translates as "the three-step waterfall".
A well-kept path with steps leads down past the tiers, with viewing platforms and a garden around them. It is easy, quick and good for families, which also means it gets busy on weekends.
The falls are fullest during and just after the monsoon.
