Umiam Lake is a large reservoir created by damming the Umiam river, and its blue water surrounded by pine-covered hills is the first big view most travellers get of Meghalaya as they drive up from Guwahati. It lies about 17 km before Shillong, right beside NH6.
The lakeside viewpoints along the highway are good for a quick stop. For boating, kayaking and other water sports, head to the activity areas on the shore, where operators run speed boats and pedal boats. The lake is especially lovely at sunset and on misty mornings.
Because it is on the main road, Umiam fits into an arrival or departure day without adding travel time.
